Mystical Underworld Experiences in the Devil's Cave

Have a devilish family outing in Hesse´s oldest accessible show cave in Steinau an der Straße. Not far from the motorway A66 and yet idyllically situated in the middle of a nature reserve, the Devil´s Cave Steinau offers fascinating insights into the geology of the landscape between Spessart and Vogelsberg.

A short hike is the first thing you have to do before visiting the cave, because the stalactite cave can only be reached on foot (exceptions for people with disabilities can be arranged with the cave guide). The way from the parking lot to the entrance of the cave takes about ten minutes. But visitors are richly rewarded for this little hike – a natural monument to the history of the earth with wonderfully bizarre shapes has been created here over the course of around 2.5 million years. You can admire beautiful Stalactites, stalagmites and rare columns, which are typical formations found in the dripstone cave. Let yourself be enchanted by the play of the various colours, while discrete illuminations impressively emphasize the natural beauty. The temperature inside the cave is only 7-11 degrees Celsius all year round, warm clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended for an untroubled underworld experience.
The best way to combine a half hour guided tour through the Devil´s Cave is an extended hike through the surrounding nature reserve “Teufelsloch und Almosenwieden”. Every Friday there are also so called “sensory tours” during which the lighting in the cave is switched off, and the cave is mystically illuminated by the visitors´ flashlights.
